A system and method for controlling an internal combustion engine (120) by monitoring exhaust back pressure (126) and take remedial action when the exhaust back pressure exceeds a corresponding threshold. The system and method respond to increased exhaust back pressures attributable to various causes to alert the vehicle operator and/or engage engine protection mechanisms (128) depending on the back pressure severity level in an effort to avoid engine/component damage. Fault timers are provided for tracking time fault conditions are present and time that faults are active, with active faults being latched for the current ignition cycle. Available engine torque may be reduced in response to excessive exhaust back pressure. Anti-tampering logic is provide to detect attempts to defeat the protection feature.

L'invention concerne un système et un procédé pour le contrôle de moteur à combustion interne (120) à partir de la contre-pression d'échappement (126), permettant d'intervenir lorsque cette pression dépasse un seuil établi. Il s'agit d'alerter l'utilisateur et/ou de lancer des mécanismes de protection du moteur (128) lorsque ladite contre-pression augmente pour différentes raisons, en réagissant selon le niveau de gravité de la contre-pression, afin de ne pas endommager le moteur ou des éléments du moteur. Des enregistreurs de temps de défaillance indiquent le temps de présence de défaillance et le temps de défaillance active, les défaillances actives faisant l'objet d'un verrouillage pour le cycle d'allumage en cours. Il est possible de réduire le couple moteur disponible en réponse à une contre-pression excessive. Une logique anti-effraction est prévue pour déceler les tentatives de d'effraction dirigées contre la fonction de protection.
