An engine management system for a combustion engine is described herein. The system comprising a magneto having a low voltage coil dedicated to energize the ignition system. The output of the low voltage coil is rectified and regulated before being stepped up and supplied to a switching power supply converting the low do voltage to a high DC voltage adequate to supply a spark plug ignition circuit. In a preferred embodiment, the output of the switching power supply may be controlled so as to reduce the current draw from the ignition circuit at startup. The present invention is also concerned with an ignition circuit using an insulated gate bipolar junction transistor (IGBT) to control the discharge of a capacitor to allow partial discharge of the capacitor and therefore a lower mean capacitor charging current.
