An engine shutdown valve comprises a substantially circular gate movable about an axis between open and closed positions within a valve housing adapted to be mounted upon an engine induction manifold or within the engine induction piping. A gate lever connects the gate with the axis and a spring means moves the lever between the two positions. A restraining mechanism is mounted within the valve housing on the end of the lever opposed from the axis. The restraining mechanism is operable to maintain the gate in the open position and to release the gate. When the gate is released, the spring means moves the gate from the open to the closed position.
