ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for the measurement of internal combustion engine speed utilizes the variation in exhaust gas pressure which relate to the various phases of the combustion cycle. The pressure characteristics associated with a particular portion of the cycle, such as the exhaust are monitored by a pressure transducer typically placed in the tailpipe. Appropriate circuitry identifies and counts the pulses, which are converted into rpm values. Statistical techniques may be applied to the counts to improve accuracy of measurement.
