Protective coatings for metallic substrates, such as fasteners like lug nuts, bolts and anti-theft wheel locking devices for motor vehicles have enhanced protection from salt spray and other highly corrosive environmental elements by plating their base metal substrates with an electroplated sacrificial metal, particularly zinc or zinc- nickel alloy, a white corrosion inhibiting precoating and at least one additional coating applied from a curable aqueous one-step surface phosphatization corrosion resistant coating composition comprising mainly an acrylic copolymer, a non-leachable chromium based corrosion inhibitor, a zinc salt and phosphoric acid. Coated articles when fully cured possess anti-corrosion properties which are potentiated over one-step surface phosphatization coating compositions used on metal substrates alone or on non-electroplated metal coated substrates, so as to extend the useful life of the coated article.
