There is described an improved apparatus and method for enhancing the generation of heat by an auxiliary engine system comprising an auxiliary power unit including a flow path for the circulation of coolant therethrough and a water brake selectively rotatable by the auxiliary power unit, wherein the flow path directs the coolant through the water brake which increases the load on the auxiliary power unit to increase its heat production.
