A low latency network protocol for use with packet switched data networks is disclosed. In accordance with the protocol, a first computing device (l0a) forms protocol data units ("PDU"s) (50) containing data to be transmitted to a second computing device computing device (10b). Multiple PDUs grouped in sets, each containing identical data are transmitted to the second computing device at short intervals. At least one PDU (50) in each set is transmitted in a packet that conforms to a reliable protocol that requires acknowledgment of receipt of the packet. The remaining PDUs (50) are preferably transmitted in packets that conform to a protocol that does not require acknowledgement of the packets. Transmission of multiple PDUs (50) containing identical data increases the likelihood that the data will be received with minimal delay. Transmitting at least one PDU (50) using a reliable protocol ensures data will be received. At the second computing device, PDUs (50) containing duplicate data are discarded.
