ABSTRACT An image producing tube having an image transmissive faceplate disposed adjacent an aligned output screen assembly including a layer of fluorescent material for producing a visible light image which is directed through the faceplate. The faceplate is controllably radiation-darkened by exposure for a limited time to ionizing radiation from an energizable source for enhancing contrast in the image transmitted through the faceplate.
