A ring assembly for a binder or portfolio includes a ring portion for retaining sheet material. The ring portion includes a plate assembly having a pair of ends, a plurality of rings including a pair of end rings disposed at or near the ends of the plate assembly, and a pair of clips attached to the plate assembly for securing the plate assembly to a cover of a binder or portfolio. The clips are disposed on the plate assembly longitudinally within the end rings such that one of the end rings is disposed on the plate assembly between one of the ends and one of the clips and the other the end ring is disposed on the plate assembly between the other the end and the other the clip. For three-ring binders with standard 4 1/2-inch spacing between rings, the ring assemblies of the invention may be at least 15% shorter than conventional ring assemblies. The clips may be attached directly to a cover or to a base portion that is attached to a cover.
