A Fast Reroute implementation where switchover time to backup tunnels upon failure of a protected network element is independent of a number of entries corresponding to forwarding equivalence classes forwarding over LSPs using that element. During normal operation of a packet forwarding device, adjacency information for a received packet is retrieved from a forwarding table based on a look-up of the packet~s forwarding equivalence class. Upon failure of a link or node, the appropriate entries in this forwarding table are rewritten to implement the switchover to preconfigured backup tunnels. The switchover is effective even before the rewrite process has completed. Upon detection of the failure, forwarding processing shifts to a fix-up mode. During the fix-up mode, the look-up to the previously mentioned forwarding table is followed by a look-up to a backup tunnel adjacency table based on a pointer retrieved from the forwarding table. Operations relating to use of this backup tunnel adjacency table increase forwarding time somewhat but only during the special fix-up mode.
La présente invention se rapporte à une implémentation de réacheminement rapide, dans laquelle le temps de basculement vers des tunnels auxiliaires, lors de la défaillance d'un élément de réseau protégé, est indépendant du nombre d'entrées correspondant à des classes d'équivalence de transfert effectuant un transfert par des LSP faisant appel audit élément. Lors du fonctionnement normal d'un dispositif de transfert de paquets, des informations de contiguïté liées à un paquet reçu sont extraites d'une table de transfert, sur la base d'une consultation de la classe d'équivalence de transfert du paquet. Lors de la défaillance d'une liaison ou d'un noeud, les entrées appropriées contenues dans ladite table de transfert sont réécrites afin que le basculement vers des tunnels auxiliaires préconfigurés soit réalisé. Le basculement est actif même avant que le processus de réécriture ne soit achevé. Lors de la détection de la défaillance, le traitement de transfert passe en mode correction. Pendant le mode correction, la consultation de ladite table de transfert est suivie d'une consultation d'une table de contiguïté de tunnels auxiliaires, en fonction d'un pointeur extrait de la table de transfert. Des opérations liées à l'utilisation de ladite table de contiguïté de tunnels auxiliaires augmentent un peu le temps de transfert mais uniquement pendant le mode correction spécial.
