Illumination sources (106a-106b), each including at least one light emitting diode L1-l4, are connected either in series or in parallel by a switching circuit (108), depending upon an applied input voltage. The switching circuit (108) switches the illumination sources from series- to parallel-connection, or vice versa, when the applied input voltage crosses a threshold value in traversing the operating range of applied input voltages. Because the light emitting diodes L1-L4 within the illumination sources (106a-106b) are switched from series to parallel connection at a defined kickover point (202b), the voltage-luminance characteristic (202) changes on opposite sides of the kickover point (202b). The resulting overall voltage-luminance characteristic (202) has greater variability in luminance across the entire operating range of applied input voltages, and luminance-variance is not limited to only a portion of the operating range.

L'invention porte sur des sources d'éclairage (106a-106b), comprenant au moins chacune une DEL (L1-l4), montées soit en série soit en parallèle et pouvant passer d'un état à l'autre sous la commande d'un circuit de commutation (108) en fonction d'une tension appliquée. Le circuit de commutation (108) fait passer les sources d'éclairage du montage en série au montage en parallèle ou vice versa quand la tension appliquée passe par une valeur seuil alors qu'elle parcourt la plage de fonctionnement des tensions d'entrée appliquées.
