A catalyst for converting methanol to light olefins and the process for making and using the catalyst are disclosed and claimed. SAPO-34 is a specific catalyst that benefits from its preparation in accordance with this invention. A seed material is used in making the catalyst that has a higher content of the EL metal than is found in the principal part of the catalyst. The molecular sieve has predominantly a roughly rectangular parallelepiped morphology crystal structure with a lower fault density and a better selectivity for light olefins.

L'invention concerne un catalyseur permettant de convertir du méthanol en oléfines légères et le procédé de préparation et d'utilisation du catalyseur. SAPO-34 est un catalyseur spécifique présentant un caractère avantageux grâce à la préparation selon l'invention. Un matériau de semence est utilisé dans la préparation du catalyseur et comprend une teneur en métal EL supérieure à celle de la partie principale du catalyseur. Le tamis moléculaire présente principalement une structure cristalline de morphologie parallélépipédique grossièrement rectangulaire à densité d'erreur inférieure et sélectivité supérieure pour des oléfines légères.
