The invention concerns a closing device comprising first rollers (21, 22) for driving forward an envelope (12), with its flap open (14), to an envelope closing station, a retractable pressing member (2, 3), second rollers (26, 27) and control means designed to: bring the pressing member (2, 3) on the path of the envelope and push the flap (14), reverse said second rollers (26, 27) to turn over the envelope (12) and its flap (14) towards and into the pressing member (2, 3), activate then release the pressing member (2, 3) to stick the flap (14), resume the forward movement of the second rollers (26, 27) to drive the envelope (12) outside the pressing member (2, 3) and outside the closing station, and causing the pressing member (2, 3) to be retracted again.
