An environmental control system for persons with disabilities who utilize electrically powered wheelchairs that have an electrical control system that includes a directional switching mechanism to control the movement of the wheelchair. The environmentalcontrol system comprises a portable signal generator that includes a portable signal transmitter and a control mechanism including a first receiver. The portable signal generator is capable of being integrated into the electrical control system of the wheelchair and utilizes the wheelchair directional switching mechanism to operate the portable signal transmitter. The portable signal transmitter generates user defined signals corresponding to selective user-actuated movements of the wheelchair directional switching mechanism. The first receiver receives the user defined signals generated by the portable signal transmitter. Upon receipt of the user defined signals the control mechanism operatively controls the function of an environmental system such that the function of the environmental system may be remotely controlled from the wheelchair through selective operation of the wheelchair directional switching mechanism.
