The invention discloses a protective method suitable for reducing the environmental impact of treatments in an area such as turf areas by applying a protective layer of a flexible material to the area to be protected. The protective layer is a length of thermoplastic sheet material free from apparent apertures when in a lay-flat condition but which has slits formed in the material to permit the passage of moisture such as would be encountered in a rainfall; the material is of a type which permits the passage of sunlight through to the protected area to permit it to grow.
