The invention relates to a method wherein coal is desulfurized by treatment with a hydrolase to convert organic sulfur moieties in the coal matrix to sulfates, and by treatment with a sulfatase to cleave the sulfates. In particular the invention provides a method for reducing the total sulfur content of a fossil fuel containing organic sulfur comprising the steps of: contacting the fossil fuel with a solution containing sulfatase to release organic sulfur as water-soluble free sulfate; recovering from the solution a fossil fuel having a reduced sulfur content.
