The invention relates to an enzymatic method of producing 4-0-.beta.-D- galactopyranosyl-D-xylose which is used for the in vivo evaluation of intestinal lactase activity in humans. The inventive method consists in: a) reacting D-xilose with a .beta.-D-galactopyranoside for 2 48 h in a medium buffered to pH 5 9 and at a temperature that varies between the freezing of the mixture and 45 ~C, and subsequently adding 10-10,000 units of .beta.-D- galactosidase per gram of .beta.-D-galactopyranoside; b) stopping the reaction by deactivating the enzyme; and c) isolating and crystallising the fractions that contain 4-O-.beta.-D-galactopyranosyl-D-xilose in a crystallisation mixture selected between acetone/methanol (5:1-20:1) and acetone/water (5:1- 20:1).

L'invention concerne un procédé enzymatique permettant d'obtenir du 4-0- beta -D-galactopyranosyl-D-xylose, utile pour l'évaluation in vivo de l'activité de la lactase intestinale chez les humains. Ce procédé consiste a) à faire réagir durant 2-48 h, le D-xilose avec un beta -D-galactopyranoside dans un milieu tamponné à un pH compris entre 5,0 et 9,0 et à une température qui oscille entre le point de congélation du mélange et 45 °C, à ajouter 10-10'000 unités de beta -D-galactosidase par gramme de beta -D-galactopyranoside; b) à bloquer la réaction par désactivation de l'enzyme et c) à isoler et à cristalliser les fractions contenant le 4-O- beta -D-galactopyranosyl-D-xylose dans un mélange de cristallisation sélectionné entre un mélange acétone/méthanol (5:1-20:1) et acétone/eau (5:1-20:1).
