ABSTRACT L-serine is synthesized from glycine and form- aldehyde in the presence of biocatalytic amounts of serine hydroxymethyltransferase and tetrahydrofolate under L-serine producing conditions, wherein the am- ount of tetrahydrofolate is sufficient to protect the serine hydroxymethyltransferase from being in- activated by the formaldehyde.
