This invention relates to an ethylene oxide catalyst which contains silver and one or more alkali metal promoters supported on a carrier having a crush strength of at least 2.3 kg and a settled packing density of at least about 0.48 kg/litre which comprises first and second alpha alumina components with a first alpha alumina component in the form of particles having a median crystallite size of from 0.4 to 4 µm providing from 95 % to 40 % of the total weight of alpha alumina in the carrier and a second alpha alumina component generated in situ by a sol-gel process and providing the balance of the alpha alumina in the carrier. Titanic is optionally added to the carrier.

Cette invention se rapporte à un catalyseur d'oxyde d'éthylène contenant de l'argent et un ou plusieurs promoteurs de métaux alcalins supportés sur un support présentant une résistance à la compression d'au moins 2,3 kg et une densité de tassement stabilisé d'au moins environ 0,48 kg/litre. Ce catalyseur comprend des premier et second composants d'oxyde d'aluminium alpha, le premier composant d'oxyde d'aluminium alpha se présentant sous la forme de particules ayant une grosseur de cristallite moyenne comprise entre 0,4 et 4 mu m, représentant entre 40 % et 95 % du poids total de l'oxyde d'aluminium alpha du support, et le second composant d'oxyde d'aluminium alpha généré in situ par un processus sol-gel et assurant l'équilibre de l'oxyde d'aluminum alpha dans le support.
