ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a novel epoxysuccinic acid derivative represented by the general formula(I) Image (I) wherein (1) R1 and R2 are each R3 wherein R4 is -O-A1-R4, -O-A2- R5 or -OCH2-R6 wherein A1 is alkylene or alkylidene containing zero to 4 carbon atoms or said alkylene substituted with methyl, R4 is cycloalkyl containing 3 to 10 carbon atoms, said cycloalkyl substituted with one to 3 halogen or methyl, or cycloalkenyl con- taining 5 to 8 carbon atoms, A2 is alkylene containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms or alkenylene containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, R5 is phenyl, R6 is furyl, tetrahydrofuryl, thienyl, naphthyl, naphthyl substituted with one or two halogen or methyl, or phenyl substitu- ted with one to three halogen, methyl, methoxy, methylenedioxy trifluoromethyl, or (2) R1 is hydroxy, R3 or R7, and R2 is hydr- oxy or R8 wherein R3 is as defined above, R7 is alkoxy containing one to 12 carbon atoms, allyloxy, propargyloxy, phenoxy or benzyloxy, and R8 is an amino acid residue with the proviso that R1 is neither hydroxy nor R7 when R2 is hydroxy, and salts there- of when R1 or R2 is hydroxy. These epoxysuccinic acid derivatives have excellent thiol protease inhibitory activity and anti-inflam- matory activity without the acceleration of vascular permeability.
