EROSION CONTROL OF ARC ELECTRODES BY MEANS OF AN OSCILLATING MAGNETIC FIELD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus and process, the purpose of which is to reduce the rate of erosion of at least one of two or more electrodes between which an arc is maintained, by means of the provision of a field coil around at least one of the electrodes and supplying the field coil with direct current which is caused to oscillate at a frequency in the range 5 x 10-1 to 1 x 10-4 Hz thereby moving the arc foot over the surface of the electrode around which is provided the field coil.
