2103563 9213593 PCTABS00014 An esophageal-stomach displacement electrode comprises a flexible tubular member (10) designed to be inserted through the esophagus (E) into the stomach (S). An electrode (14) is carried by the tube (10) in the region of its distal end (12). The tube (10) is hinged (26) near the distal end (12) which enables that end of the tube to displace angularly in the stomach (S) and displace the stomach wall. The stomach wall displacement may occur by angularly displacing the distal end (12) or by otherwise pulling the tube partially out of the esophagus (E) after its distal end (12) partially displaced toward the stomach wall. A displacement mechanism (22) is disposed in the tube in the region of the hinge (26) and is controlled from a point (20) externally of the body for causing the distal end (26) of the tube (10) to displace angularly and to be positioned to engage and displace the stomach (S).
