Essentially colorless, transparent polyimide coatings and films prepared by combining aromatic dianhydrides of general formula: (see formula I) wherein X represents -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, -CH2- , -CF2-, -C(CH3)2-, -C(CF3)2-~ or a direct bond, with para-substituted aromatic diamines of general formula: (see formula II and III) wherein Y represents -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, -CH2-, -CF2-, -C(CH3)2-, -C(CF3)2- , -CO- or a direct bond, are provided. The polyimide coatings and films are produced by a process whereby the dianhydride and diamine monomer components are reacted at temperatures of greater than 80°C.
