ABSTRACT 2-Heteroaromatic alkanoate esters of the formula: Image wherein: R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbons, cycloalkyl of 3 to 6 carbons or together represent a methylene group -(CH2)n- where n is a whole number of 1 to 6, provided that R1 and R2 are not both hydrogen; Ar is optionally substituted phenyl; and Het is a heterocyclic ring containing one or more N, S or O atoms in the ring; are useful as inhibitors of human leukocyte or neutrophil elastase and may be used for the treatment of emphysema, inflammatory diseases, dermatitis or ischemia/reperfusion injury.
