-15- Abstract of the Disclosure Novel, ethoxylated lignites which exhibit excellent water solubility as well as solubility in organic liquids are ob- tained by ethoxylating lignite at elevated temperatures using various weight ratios of ethylene oxide to lignite, the ethoxy- lation being conducted using an alkali metal alkylate catalyst in a solvent which is generally inert under reaction condi- tions.
