Novel substituted carbazole compounds of Formula I are active as melatonergic agents: Image wherein: R1 is C(O)R3 or SO2R4; R2 is H or C1-6 alkoxy; R3 is C1-6 alkyl, (CH2)nSR4, (CH2)nOR4, (CH2)nSO2R4, or NHR4; R4 is C1-4 alkyl; and m is 1 or 2; and n is 1 to4.
