ETHYLATION OF TOLUENE OR ETHYLBENZENE WITH HIGH SILICA/ALUMINA ZSM-5 TYPE CATALYST ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification discloses a process for producing ethyl toluene or diethylbenzene with minimal undesired by-product formation utilizing a zeolite catalyst having a silica/alumina mole ratio greater than about 500. The starting materials are monoalkyl benzene and an ethylating agent and the reaction is carried out at 250°C to 600°C and at a pressure of 0.1 to 100 atmos- pheres. The catalyst also has a constraint index of approximately 1 to 12.
