ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the manufacture of ethylene oxide by the partial oxidation of ethylene in the vapor phase, the effluent gases from the reaction are absorbed in ethyl- ene carbonate prior to separation and purification of the ethylene oxide. The ethylene oxide is then separated from the ethylene carbonate by heating the latter with a heated, inert stripping gas, i.e., CO2 or nitrogen. This process provides advantages over the use of water as the absorbent because the heat requirements are reduced and smaller apparatus and equipment can be used. 26,616-F -9-
