An Ethernet network comprises nodes which support a plurality of different forwarding modes. A range of VLAN Identifiers (VIDs) are allocated to each of the forwarding modes. Connections are configured between a source node and a destination node of the network using different forwarding modes. Packets carrying data traffic are sent to the destination node by selectively setting a VID in a packet to a first value, to transfer a packet via a first connection and a first forwarding mode, and a second value to transfer a packet via the second connection and the second forwarding mode. Packets received from both of the connections and sent on to an end-user. VLAN Identifiers can be allocated to different releases of functionality at nodes (e.g. software releases) such that packets are forwarded via a set of nodes supporting a first release, or via a set of nodes supporting a second release. It is possible to provide a controlled and disruption-free network evolution.
Un réseau Ethernet comporte des nuds qui acceptent une pluralité de modes de transfert différents. Une plage d'identifiants VLAN (VID, VLAN Identifiers) est attribuée à chacun des modes de transfert. Les connexions sont configurées entre un nud source et un nud destination du réseau à l'aide de différents modes de transfert. On envoie les paquets transportant un flux de données au nud destination en réglant sélectivement un VID dans un paquet à une première valeur pour transférer un paquet via une première connexion et un premier mode de transfert, et à une seconde valeur pour transférer un paquet via la seconde connexion et le second mode de transfert. Les paquets sont reçus des deux connexions et sont envoyés à un utilisateur final. Il est possible d'attribuer des identifiants VLAN à différentes versions de fonctionnalités au niveau des nuds (par exemple, des versions de logiciels) de façon à transmettre les paquets via un ensemble de nuds acceptant une première version, ou via un ensemble de nuds acceptant une seconde version. Il est possible de fournir une évolution de réseau contrôlée et dépourvue d'interruptions.
