ABSTRACT A control system which serves to accurately position an excavator at a predetermined working elevation. The control system includes adjustment means which causes the implement to follow the bottom profile which is to be excavated. The control system is responsive to a rotary laser beam transmitter which establishes a horizontal reference plane as a sighting beacon for a laser receiver mounted on the implement. The deviation from the reference plane is transmitted to a computer which controls the adjustment means to control the operation of the implement.
