ABSTRACT . EXHAUST GAS CATALYST MONITORING. Operation of an internal combustion engine is controlled by an engine management system in response to a lambda sensor which monitors the oxygen content of exhaust gas flowing into a catalytic converter. A universal exhaust gas oxygen (UEGO) sensor monitors the amount of oxygen in exhaust gas leaving the converter. The engine management system cycles the air/fuel ratio above and below stoichiometric and the peak-to-peak amplitude of the UEGO sensor output represents the performance of the catalyst in the converter such that larger amplitudes correspond to poorer performance.
