CA 2046232

An exhaust gas filter, in particular a soot filter for a diesel engine, is provided with a filter body (1) disposed in a housing (2) and through which the exhaust gases to be cleaned flow, having an inlet duct (3, 4) and an outlet duct (5, 6). Between the inlet duct (3, 4) and the outlet duct (5, 6) there is (are) disposed one or several lateral line(s) passing the filter body (1), which at both their ends are connected via apertures (8, 9) to the inlet duct (3, 4) or outlet duct (5, 6) respectively. The cross sections of the inlet duct (3, 4), outlet duct (5, 6) and the lateral line(s) are selected so that in the uncharged condition of the filter body (1) a return flow in the lateral line(s) is produced, while a bypass flow is produced when a preselected charging condition of the filter body (1) is reached.
