ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLSOURE An oxidation catalyst is provided herein for use in a catalytic exhaust gas purification unit, e.g., one fitted to an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine intended for use with a fuel containing a lead compound. The catalyst comprises a mixture of at least one platinum group metal, and a base metal oxide component consisting of at least one of SnO2, TiO2 and NiMoO4 deposited upon a substrate in the form of which is a monolithic structure made from ceramic or metallic material the material being coated with a refractory metal oxide. The catalyst is used to promote the oxidation of hydrocarbons in IC engines supplied with lead- containing fuel.
