An exhaust gas purification apparatus for use in an internal combustion engine comprises an exhaust gas duct connected to the engine through which the exhaust gas containing NOx gas passes and a catalyst so disposed in the exhaust gas duct that it contacts with the exhaust gas. The catalyst chemically,adsorbs NOx under the condition that a stoichiometric amount of a gaseous oxidizing agent present in the exhaust gas is larger than that of a gaseous reducing agent present in the exhaust gas for reducing NOx, while NOx being adsorbed is catalytically reduced in the presence of the reducing agent under the condition that the stoichiometric amount of the oxidizing agent is not larger than that of the reducing agent. Thereby, NOx in the lean burn exhaust gas in the engine can be effectively made harmless.
Un dispositif de purification des gaz d'échappement, destiné à un moteur à combustion interne, comprend un tuyau d'échappement des gaz relié au moteur, par lequel passent les gaz d'échappement contenant des oxydes d'azote, et un catalyseur disposé dans le tuyau d'échappement de façon à entrer en contact avec lesdits gaz. Le catalyseur absorbe chimiquement les oxydes d'azote à condition que la quantité stoechiométrique d'un agent oxydant gazeux présent dans les gaz d'échappement soit supérieure à celle d'un agent réducteur gazeux présent dans lesdits gaz pour réduire les oxydes d'azote, les oxydes d'azote adsorbés étant catalytiquement réduits en présence de l'agent réducteur à condition que la quantité stoechiométrique de l'agent oxydant ne soit pas supérieure à celle de l'agent réducteur. Ceci permet de brûler facilement des gaz de combustion pauvres en oxydes d'azote.
