Abstract of the Disclosure An internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas recirculation system is disclosed. The system includes means defining a passageway between an engine exhaust gas passage and an intake passage to enable recirculatory flow of engine exhaust gas through the engine and valve means for controlling such recirculatory flow of engine exhaust gas through the passageway. A ratio of the minimum flow area (SE) of the exhaust passage to the minimum flow area (SI) of said intake passage is not smaller than 0.15 (0.15 < SE/SI) and a ratio of the maximum flow area (SO) of the valve means when it is fully opened to the minimum flow area (SE) of the exhaust passage is not smaller than 0.2 and not greater than 0.6 (0.2 < SO/SE < 0.6). - 1 -
