ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An exhaust manifold for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is provided with preliminary oxidation reaction chambers, each of which receive exhaust gases from exhaust port liners each serving a pair of adjacent cylinders of different exhaust timing. These preliminary oxidation reaction chambers each communicate downstream with a main oxidation reaction chamber subdivided into a plurality of concentric subchambers. The subchambers enclose the preliminary oxidation reaction chambers and exhaust gas inlet pipes. Combustion of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) is accomplished in the preliminary oxidation reaction chambers, and the exhaust gases are maintained at relatively high temperature and retained for a sufficient period of time in the subchambers to accomplish combustion of the unburned carbon monoxide (CO).
