An expandable baton (8) includes a plurality of sections (10, 14, and 16) adapted to be stowed in a nested, collapsed position. The section (10, 14, and 16) may be opened by swinging the baton in a whipping action into a locked extended position. Each of these sections is made of dissimilar material with the tip section (16) having at least a portion being made of a high mass material to preserve the striking force when used in a whipping motion, and the largest handle section (10) being made of a lightweight material to reduce the weight of the baton. Intermediate sections (14) may be included and may be made of either the lightweight material or the heavy mass material, as desired.
