Treating a site within the body, e.g., placing endoprosthesis (26) into the body, with a catheter (12) having a proximal portion (20) remaining outside the body and a shaft (14) for positioning inside the body. The shaft (14) includes in a distal portion (22) a selectively expandable member (18) which can be expanded from a small cross-sectional profile for receiving said endoprosthesis (26) about said expandable member (18) in a compact configuration and a large, expanded cross- sectional profile for expanding said prosthesis during placement into the body, and an elastic strip (30, 32) wrapped in helical fashion about said expandable member such that the strip (30, 32) is stretched when said expandable member (18) is expanded to said large cross- sectional profile.

La présente invention se rapporte au traitement d'une zone à l'intérieur du corps, en plaçant une endoprothèse (256) dans le corps, à l'aide d'un cathéter (12) comprenant une partie proximale (20) restant à l'extérieur du corps ainsi qu'un tube (14) pour le positionnement à l'intérieur du corps. Le tube (14) comporte une partie distale (22), un élément expansible sélectivement (18) pouvant être dilaté à partir d'un profil à petite section transversale afin que ledit élément expansible (18) vienne se loger dans ladite endoprothèse (26) dans une configuration compacte. Ledit élément expansible (18) comporte également un grand profil transversal dilaté afin de dilater ladite prothèse au cours de son placement dans le corps, ainsi qu'une bande élastique (30, 32) enroulée de façon hélicoïdale autour dudit élément expansible, de telle sorte que la bande élastique (30, 32) s'étire lorsque ledit élément expansible (18) est dilaté jusqu'à atteindre ledit grand profil transversal.
