ABSTRACT The invention relates to improvements in expandable drills and, in particular, to an expandable drill having a two-piece drill body with connectable upper and lower drill body portions. The lower drill body is provided with a set of rotary cutters mounted on blocks which are secured within pockets in the lower drill body. The upper drill body is also provided with a set of rotary cutters mounted on arms which are slidable within corresponding inclined grooves in the upper drill body for relative inward and outward movement with respect to the drill body. Stops are provided at the upper ends of the grooves to limit the upward, and hence outward, movement of the upper rotary cutters. The lower end of the grooves terminate at the lower surface of the upper drill body so that the upper mating surface of the lower drill body acts as the stop for the upper rotary cutter assemblies, limiting the downward, and hence inward, movement thereof. A valve is disposed within the drill body for controlling the flow of drilling fluid to the cutter assemblies. The two-piece drill body provides economy of manufacture and facilitates removal and/or replacement of the cutter assemblies.
