The present invention relates to an expandable matrix optical switch module adapted to be used as an nxm switch singly or as a larger switch assembly comprised of multiple switch modules coupled together. The switch module includes arrays of input and output transfer waveguides, such as pigtail fiber connector ends, aligned with the input waveguide array and with the output waveguide array. Switch modules may be coupled together permitting a signal to be passed from a first into one or more additional switch modules, effectively increasing the number of input waveguides or output waveguides in a switch assembly. An existing switch module can be expanded as needed to accommodate increased needs. Larger switch arrays may be manufactured in smaller modular units an assembled to the custom requirements without significantly increasing production costs. Coupling is achieved using splice fiber techniques, fiber connectors, or direct lens to lens connection. Additional control means are necessary to coordinate software addressing and switching control.
