An expandable stent is disclosed which is implantable within a blood vessel or other body lumen for maintaining lumen patency. The stent comprises a plurality of interconnected stent modules. Each of the stent modules includes first and second segments which are joined together by first and second connectors located on diametrically opposite sides of the module. The first and second segments are formed in a sinusoidal pattern and are moveable between flattened and expanded configurations. The stent modules are coupled along a common longitudinal axis with interconnection elements extending between the connectors of adjacent modules. This arrangement results in a stent having optimal longitudinal flexibility as well as radial stability. The modules may be fabricated in an automated manufacturing method using inexpensive equipment from an even number of wire strands of substantially equal length. In an alternative embodiment of the invention graft material may be clamped between wire wall sections of the stent for delivering drugs to the site of a target lesion.
L'invention concerne un stent extensible, implantable dans un vaisseau sanguin ou dans une autre lumière corporelle, permettant de conserver la perméabilité de ladite lumière. Ce stent comprend une pluralité de modules de stent reliés entre eux. Chaque module de stent comprend un premier et un second segment reliés par un premier et un second connecteur, placés sur les côtés diamétralement opposés dudit module. Ces premier et second segment sont formés en motif sinusoïdal, et sont mobiles entre des configurations repliée et déployée. Les modules de stent sont couplés le long d'un axe longitudinal commun avec des éléments de connexion s'étendant entre les connecteurs des modules adjacents. Cet agencement produit un stent présentant une flexibilité longitudinale optimale ainsi qu'une stabilité radiale. Ces modules peuvent être fabriqués à l'aide d'un procédé automatique utilisant un équipement bon marché, à partir d'un nombre pair de fils métalliques de longueur sensiblement égale. Selon un autre mode de réalisation de l'invention, un matériau de greffe peut être fixé entre des sections de parois de fil métallique du stent, afin de distribuer des médicaments sur le site d'une lésion cible.
