ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An expandable styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer particle comprising the reaction product of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer comprising from 2 to 25 weight percent of maleic anhydride and having an average degree of polymerization of from 500 to 4,000 with a hydroxy compound having from 2 to 4 active hydroxy groups and from 2 to 15 carbon atoms, wherein the mole ratio of the hydroxy compound is from 2.5 to 150 mole percent relative to the maleic anhydride and, wherein the reaction product is impregnated with a volatile blowing agent. A bead molding process for preparing foams from these expandable particles is also disclosed.
