An expandable stent for a tubular (e.g. vascular) graft or prosthesis or for expanding or supporting a body passageway comprises a thin walled tubular member (102) having slots (104) defining a plurality of interconnected elongate members (108) arranged such that the application of a distributed radially-outward force within the tubular member expands it radially by deformation thereof, so as to open-out the slots, characterised by means (106, 107) defining relatively weak portions (118) of locally-reduced cross section which upon expansion of the stent act as plastic hinges and in which said deformation is concentrated.

L'invention concerne un dispositif expansible soit de maintien d'un greffon (par exemple, de type vasculaire) ou d'une prothèse tubulaire, soit de dilatation ou de maintien d'un passage corporel. Ce dispositif comporte un élément tubulaire à paroi fine (102) pourvu de fentes (104) définissant une pluralité d'éléments de forme allongée (108) liés les uns aux autres et disposés de telle manière que l'application, à l'intérieur de l'élément tubulaire, d'une force radiale dirigée vers l'extérieur permet la déformation radiale dudit élément. Cette déformation provoque l'ouverture des fentes qui se caractérisent par la présence de parties (106, 107) qui définissent des zones relativement faibles (118), à section localement réduite, et qui, lors de la dilatation du dispositif de maintien, se comportent comme des charnières plastiques à l'intérieur desquelles se concentre la déformation.
