Expanded and extruded polyolefin foams are obtained using environmentally benign non-VOC methyl formate as a blowing agent. The blowing agent can be a blend further including at least one co-blowing agent, preferably an environmentally friendly species (e.g., non-VOC), which is either a physical co- blowing agent (e g an inorganic agent, a hydrocarbon, a halogenated hydrocarbon, a hydrocarbon with polar, functional group(s) or any combination thereof), or a chemical co-blowing agent, or combinations thereof. The blowing agent blend can include any combination of methyl formate and one or more co-blowing agents. The polymer foam can include polyethylene, polypropylene or a combination thereof. The methyl formate-based blowing agent blends produce stable foams for various applications, including containers, packaging systems, as well as for insulation and protective cushioning. Processes for the preparation of such foams are also provided.
L'invention concerne des mousses de polyoléfine expansée et extrudée obtenues en utilisant du formiate de méthyle qui n'est pas un COV et qui est respectueux vis-à-vis de l'environnement en tant qu'agent d'expansion. L'agent d'expansion peut être un mélange comprenant en plus au moins un co-agent d'expansion, de préférence une substance respectueuse de l'environnement (par exemple qui n'est pas un COV), qui est soit un co-agent d'expansion physique (par exemple un agent inorganique, un hydrocarbure, un hydrocarbure halogéné, un hydrocarbure ayant un ou plusieurs groupes fonctionnels polaires ou n'importe quelle association de ceux-ci), soit un co-agent d'expansion chimique, soit des associations de ceux-ci. Le mélange d'agents d'expansion peut comprendre n'importe quelle association de formiate de méthyle et d'un ou plusieurs co-agents d'expansion. La mousse de polymère peut comprendre du polyéthylène, du polypropylène ou une association de ceux-ci. Les mélanges d'agents d'expansion à base de formiate de méthyle produisent des mousses stables pour différentes applications, dont des récipients, des systèmes d'emballage, ainsi que pour l'isolation et le rembourrage de protection. L'invention concerne également des procédés pour la préparation de telles mousses.
