ABSTRACT An expansible reel for testing filamentary material such as optical fibres, formed by a number of rigid slats, parallel to each other and to a central axis of the reel, and joined at their ends to supports in the manner allowing small radial displacements of the members. Between adjoining rigid members are placed inflatable members into which compressed air is introduced to force apart the rigid members when an optical fibre or other filamentary material wound around the reel is to be submitted to tests under controlled tensile stress conditions.
