The present invention relates to an expansion device installed inside a water heater tank to control pressure build up from expanding heated water. The expansion device comprises a closed air-tight flexible bladder filled with a predetermined volume of gas at a given temperature, such that when water is heated, expansion volume of the water so heated is provided by compression of the gas filled bladder, thereby compressing the gas, and when a demand is made for heated water, the expansion device expands back to about its original volume. The expansion device provides an additional volume for thermal expansion of heated water, avoiding opening of the relief safety valve and wasting of the expanded heated water.
