ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A machine and method are disclosed for expanding tube ends in the assembly of the tubes in a tube plate of a heat exchanger, the bores of the tube plates having annular lips placed in confronting positions on two metal sheets arranged parallely and intended to receive the tube ends. The expansion machine has an expansible tough rubber plug which is introduced in the tube end once the tube has been slipped in the tube plate bore and the expansion of the plug radially outwards provides a tight seal between the tube wall and the annular lips.
