The present invention provides retention devices (44) for securing an expendable mass (26), e.g., lipsticks, deodorants, anti-perspirants, glue or the like, to an expellant holder (10) by providing one or more spikes (46) fixedly attached to a receiving cup (22) of the expellant holder (10) such that the one or more spikes (46) penetrate the expendable mass (26) to anchor the mass (26) to the receiving cup (22).
