ABSTRACT The invention relates to two-wave explosive cutting of targets, such as metal plates or sheets. Prior art methods for two-wave explosive material along its side edges in advance of its mid-regions. The present invention proposes a method of and an apparatus for two-wave explosive cutting in which complex detonation front in the explosive are avoided and the two-wave form for the shock wave produced by the detonation is achieved by varying the progress of the shock wave to the target in sections normal to the line of cut. In one embodiment, a strip of explosive material is supported on a shock wave delay element which spaces the mid-regions of the strip of explosive further from the target than the side edges of said strip. On detonation, the shock waves produced by the side edges of the explosive have less distance to travel through the element than the mid-regions and thereby the classic two shock wave fronts situation is obtained in the target.
