ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A press mechanism for removing water from a traveling fibrous paper web including an elongate extended press nip formed between first and second pressing shoes each having a relieved leading edge with an elongate extending following pressing face, felts sandwiching the web in the nip, and traveling impervious belts sandwiching the felt and web there- between with the belts driven by a grooved traction roll and guide roll, and at least one of the shoes pivotally supported along its length and pressing force being applied to one of the shoes by a piston in a cylinder and pressurized fluid applied to the cylinder and piston to obtain the pressing force.
